What Does It Mean To Create A Sacred Space

As I have been embarking on a journey that includes rituals around meditation, journaling, spiritual devotion, and more, I am constantly confronted with the concept of creating sacred spaces. These spaces are referred to both in the physical and spiritual realms. So what does it mean to create a sacred space? Well, first, take a deep breath, and allow me to assure you it sounds far more intimidating than it actually is.

Creating a sacred space is all about intention. If it is a physical sacred space you desire to create, then ask yourself how you intend to use the space, and what might help you to spiritually, physically or emotionally connect with the space in a way that helps you to actualize it in the way you desire.

For example, if the space is a physical space intended for journaling, you might want a space that has a window out to one of your most favorite views. You might want to incorporate Feng shui, an aromatherapy diffuser, your favorite inspirational books, and perhaps your favorite pen.

If, on the other hand, you are creating a physical space to do spiritual work, you may want to do a smoke cleansing by smudging or saining (suening or to sein or sén in Old Irish) the area with herbs. The goal of this is to remove negative (low vibrational or dark) energies from the area before beginning your work.

Creating a sacred space within your spiritual self is also about intention. But in addition, it is about boundaries. This is of vital importance when you dedicate your spiritual self to ritual work. Protecting yourself from outside energies is always important. Whatever spiritual path you are on, it is vital that you are very intentional regarding whom you open yourself up to and what energies you take in as well as release to the world. Sacred spaces within yourself can include (but are not limited to) working with your chakras, tantra practices, and working with energy chords.

And what if you are a single mom with three kids, a demanding career, a side hustle, PTO meetings, sports events, and piles of dirty dishes and unfolded clothes? Well, you are in good company because I just described myself. Do not fret. Do what you can. Find a quiet spot even if it is in the bathroom after you shower. Light a candle. State your intention and take 5 minutes to do what you want for you. Start there. Be proud of yourself for each step you take forward.
